How do we make the most of renewable energy? Hydro is how.
Game-changing energy storage, right here in Queensland.
Pumped hydro energy storage is the foundation of a successful and sustainable clean energy mix. It makes it possible to access energy generated by wind and solar during the day, store it and then use it at peak times in the morning and evening, as well as overnight when there’s no sunshine. It’s also our back up on days when the sun doesn’t shine, or the wind doesn’t blow.
It’s Queensland Hydro’s job to design and provide the pumped hydro assets needed to make the shift to renewable energy a reality for Queenslanders. We’ve commenced planning for two proposed projects, one at Lake Borumba, west of Gympie in the south east, and the other in the Pioneer Valley, west of the major North Queensland city of Mackay.
The Australian Government has committed to reducing emissions by 43 per cent by 2030 and achieving Net Zero by 2050. The Queensland Government has also set targets of 70 per cent renewable energy by 2032 and 80 per cent by 2035.
Queensland Hydro’s proposed pumped hydro energy storage projects will help us reach those goals and transform our electricity supply to run mainly on renewables.
Working collaboratively.
We recognise successful project delivery requires collaboration. We’re committed to working productively with the communities where our proposed pumped hydro energy storage projects will be located, particularly landholders, other residents in the local community and local businesses and industry.
Ensuring that both proposed projects deliver both short and long-term benefits for regional economies and the environment is important to us.
